The Global Traceability Framework for Beef and Leather does not represent a wholly new approach. Rather, it builds on a foundation of methods, standards, and initiatives that have been developed, tested, and proven effective by others across the traceability and supply chain community. The lessons learned from these efforts have been invaluable in shaping a framework that is both practical and globally applicable. We extend our appreciation to the initiatives and organizations whose pioneering work made this framework possible.

This framework is both a continuation of and a complement to these earlier efforts, seeking to expand their reach, harmonize their insights, and apply them to the unique challenges and opportunities of beef and leather supply chains.

Global Dialogue on Seafood Traceability

The GDST was the first initiative of its kind to design and launch a global, standardized framework for interoperable traceability within a commodity sector. The GTFBL draws directly from GDST’s approach, adapting key lessons from seafood to create a framework suitable for the global beef and leather sectors.

The Sustainable Trade Initiative (IDH)

In collaboration with Wholechain and Rever, IDH developed an interoperable cattle traceability framework tailored to Brazilian cattle operations. The GTFBL builds upon this work, broadening its scope to apply globally and expanding its focus to include beef by-products such as leather.

GS1

GS1 standards form the technical foundation of this framework. Their globally recognized protocols for identification, data capture, and information exchange underpin the GTFBL and ensure alignment with international best practices.
